Bacopa monnieri is a perennial, creeping herb native to the wetlands of southern and Eastern India, Australia, Europe, Africa, Asia, and North and South America. It is known by the common names water hyssop, waterhyssop, brahmi, thyme-leafed gratiola, herb of grace, and Indian pennywort.

Bacopa monnieri is used in Ayurvedic traditional medicine to improve memory and to treat various ailments. Preliminary clinical research found that Bacopa monnieri may improve cognition.

Bacopa monnieri is a non-aromatic herb. The leaves of this plant are succulent, oblong, and 4–6 mm (0.16–0.24 in) thick. Leaves are oblanceolate and are arranged oppositely on the stem. The flowers are small, actinomorphic and white, with four to five petals. It can even grow in slightly brackish conditions. Propagation is often achieved through cuttings.

Bacopa monnieri may assist lucid dreaming by amplifying acetylcholine activity.

The best characterized phytochemicals in Bacopa monnieri are dammarane-type triterpenoid saponins known as bacosides, with jujubogenin or pseudo-jujubogenin moieties as aglycone units. Bacosides comprise a family of 12 known analogs. Other saponins called bacopasides I–XII were identified. The alkaloids brahmine, nicotine, and herpestine have been catalogued, along with D-mannitol, apigenin, hersaponin, monnierasides I–III, cucurbitacin and plantainoside B.



Medicinal Use

Violets are a rich source of vitamins A and C. They also contain a type of antioxidant called anthocyanin – responsible for their brilliant blue/purple hue. Dried violet flowers and leaves are made into syrups, tonics and teas, and can also used to make poultices, or tinctured for use in topical ointments and salves.

Spiritual/Magical Use

Violets are an herb of love and protection. Violet crowns are said to cure headache, bring sleep, and calm anger. Violets are mixed with lavender, apple blossoms, yarrow, and roses in love potions. The leaf is a protection from all evil.

Funeral Rites – Violets and periwinkle are used to decorate the graves and corpses of children.
