Tripterygium hypoglaucum (Levl.) Hutch (THH) is the source plant of a traditional Chinese medicine named Kunmingshanhaitang, which was first recorded in Compendium of Materia Medica. THH has significant anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive properties and is widely used for treating autoimmune and inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis, and kidney disease, especially in traditional Chinese medicine.

THH is mainly produced in the southwest and south of the Yangtze River in China, and also in Japan. It is defined for the treatment of arthralgia of feet and knees, hypertonicity of the limbs, malignant sore and scabies, cough with dyspnea, pharyngitis and laryngopharyngeal obstruction in traditional Chinese medicine. Modern studies have also proved that THH has a good therapeutic effect on rheumatoid arthritis. Meanwhile, it also had significant effects on chronic urticaria, systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), facial corticosteroid addictive dermatitis and aseptic pustular dermatosis. Twenty-three pharmaceutical enterprises in China produce its preparations, such as Kunming shanhaitang tablets, Huobaohuagen tablets and Kunxian capsules. Therefore, THH has made an important application value and has made a contribution to people’s health, especially in China.
